Micro Trenching for Fiber & Underground Utilities

Microtrenching is a minimally invasive underground utility installation method that cuts a narrow, shallow trench, typically 1 to 2 inches wide and 12 to 24 inches deep, directly into the pavement surface. Fampa Construction places fiber-optic cable, conduit, and other utilities inside the trench, then seals it with a specialized backfill material to restore the roadway. #WeDrillin

Our process

Cut to seal in 4 steps

Step 01

Route Walk & 811

We walk the alignment, file the 811 ticket, review locates, and pothole any crossing that needs physical verification.

Step 02

Cut & Place

The microtrencher cuts a 1 to 2 inch slot at 12 to 24 inches deep, then conduit and tracer wire drop in behind the saw.

Step 03

Backfill & Seal

Specialized backfill material is placed and sealed flush with the pavement so the roadway is restored in the same pass.

Step 04

Test & Close Out

Rod-and-rope or mandrel proofing, as-builts, and a clean site walk before we turn the route over.

Why microtrenching matters

LESS DISRUPTION,  FASTER FIBER DEPLOYMENT

Microtrenching is a minimally invasive underground utility installation method that cuts a narrow, shallow trench, typically 1 to 2 inches wide and 12 to 24 inches deep, directly into the pavement surface. Fiber optic cables, conduit, and other utilities are placed inside the trench, which is then sealed with a specialized backfill material to restore the roadway.

Compared to traditional open-cut trenching, microtrenching is faster, more cost-effective, and less disruptive to traffic, businesses, and surrounding infrastructure. It's the preferred solution for deploying fiber networks and utilities in urban environments, along roadways, and in areas where minimizing surface damage and restoration time is critical.

Fampa Construction runs microtrench routes end-to-end across the Phoenix Metro: 811 and potholing, permitting and traffic control, saw cutting, conduit and tracer wire placement, specialized backfill and sealing, and clean as-builts at closeout, all under one AZ ROC #339873 licensed contractor.
